It’s The Principal
On a nearly daily basis someone from my past comes through my line at the grocery. One of the coolest moments was when someone from elementary school came through my line, and I recognized her, even though we hadn’t seen each other for 37 years. I don’t know whether it was because her looks hadn’t changed so much, or whether I just have a knack for remembering faces, but she wasn’t the first I had recognized from that time in my life.
Today a face I recognized also recognized me. My middle school principal. The last time I saw him he was giving me detention for ducking out of the front door of the school before the last bell rang. Hey, I was just trying to get to the bus to get a good seat. I’d have had it, too, if he hadn’t pulled me back in and sat me down in his office. Detention? I don’t think that the punishment fits the crime! *Sigh* It was a long time ago, but obviously the wound is still fresh.
All kidding aside…it was really cool to see him. He smiled widely as we chatted about how much time had passed.
As he was walking away after receiving his choice of paper or plastic, I said, “Thanks, Mr. D! It was nice to see you!” I am 45 years old. I know his first name. I still cannot bring myself to call him anything other than Mr. D.
Have you ever run into anyone you hadn’t seen in a long, long time, just by chance?

Hell’s Kitchen tonight! I’ve been over American Idol since the season David Cook won. Hell’s Kitchen is my new obsession. Besides watching HGTV on occasion, it’s the only thing I typically watch on TV.
ETA: ALL STAR GAME PREEMPTED HK. I hate baseball now.
Anything on TV you’re hooked on?

My husband and I had dinner with Seedsower and her mom last night. They passing through on the way home from their road trip. We ate at a small local pub where my sister and niece work (Harrigan’s Tavern, for those familiar with the area). It was trivia night. We played. We won.
The evening with Beth didn’t last nearly long enough before they had to get back on the road, but I am glad we got to spend the time we did together. Love you, Beth!
(Note to Beth: Sorry for flashing your mom last night. It was an accident!)

I run into old friends and aquaintancec all the time…
Unfortunately none of them are multimillionaires trying to give away their money
@Aloysius_son - I seem to have that problem, as well. LOL
I have the name problem too… I still call so many of my parents friends from my childhood Aunt or Uncle.
So… You flashed Mildred?!
@angi1972 - Yeah, I did. Beth and I were comparing cleavage and I was a little too zealous. Heh.
Mr. DePalma! Old Frankie baby! Last time I saw him was in Marco Island in the hotel parking lot where we were both staying – I think it was more Mrs. Russell that was responsible for my 9 WEEKS of detention in 8th grade. Oh, well, I was actually responsible. Yeah, definitely. Evidently picking up Mr. Petrocelli’s MG with the guys and putting it in between the cinder blocks wasn’t cool. Or reading a smut novel in class. Or drawing porn on the school desks. Or smoking behind the school. Or drinking in the woods. Or making out in the hallway. Or fighting with Brett Nagot. Yeah, but Mr. D was always level-headed in his reproof.
Nice to see this post. My internet hasn’t been working well at all lately! How fun that you got to see Beth and her mom! I know just what you mean about not being able to call someone the age of a parent, by their first name – even if they have said it is fine! I don’t think kids today have that same problem (yes, I just sounded 100 when I said that)!

@jakesyzek - OMG, I remember Petro’s MG and the cinder blocks!!! HA HA HA! Yes, it was Mr. DePalma…errr, I mean Frank, LOL.
@Still_groovy - Old habits are hard to break, and it’s just the respectful thing to do, IMHO. I agree, it’s not the same with kids today…kids today…those darn younguns!
@CynaraJane - How come I always miss out on the good stuff????
@Aloysius_son - Because you haven’t gone on a road trip to Dayton lately?
I am seriously LoL-ing over you flashing Beth’s mom! That is hi-LAR-ious! I unfortunately don’t see many people from my past as I now live about 2 hours west of where I grew up.
I seriously wish that MN was on all you cool Xangan’s path for your road trips.
@skittler335 - Who knows where our travels may lead next? Possibly MN…
I much prefer Hells Kitchen to American Idol.
I live in the town I was born in, I see people I have known for 20 years constantly. It is nice when one of my contemtparies who has been gone since collage or in the military comes home.
i still call my kid’s coaches from high school “coach” even tho they are at least 15 years younger than me.
I live in the same area where I grew up,I graduated with 600 kids in high school,I see people all the time and I usually know themI look like I did when I was 10,they all know me!
I was bummed about Hells Kitchen too! I just saw a friend I’ve known since 5th grade . She’s a customer so we’ve spoken by phone but she had to come into the office and it’s the first time I’ve seen in in since Jr. High (loooong time)
Whoa! Flashing, Beth, and trivia? That’s a hella good combination!!!
Hey it sounds like a good time was had by all!! I am stuck on the detective shows and court tv shows. In session brings true court cases and analyses.( I just know that is not the right spelling) I look forward to the Casey Anthony murder trial next year. I read ‘who done it’s’ and mysteries when I curl up at the end of the day.
I am always trying to play catch up on reading here. I guess better late than not at all. “Hugs”
