  • Trivial Pursuits

I remember the first time I played the old board game Trivial Pursuit. I can remember I knew a lot of trivial things in most of the categories, except the entertainment one (which was pretty funny, seeing as how I was a theater major in college at the time, and you’d have thought I’d have been better at that one). It was a board game that my friends and I played often. There were few video games back then, or at least few good ones, and nothing like young people have nowadays where you can play them with friends all over the world. So, board games, card games, or drinking games were it…yes, it was the stone age of group entertainment.

I enjoy having some knowledge about trivial things. It impresses me when others have that knowledge, especially about the things I have no knowledge of myself. My husband spent some time playing a national trivia game at a local sports bar with friends years ago. He was, by his account, extremely good at it, and ranked number one nationally in this particular trivia group at times. I didn’t disbelieve him when he mentioned it, but I couldn’t really appreciate what he was saying until I witnessed him playing with my own ears and eyes. It wasn’t until we happened to meet up with Seedsower last week at a pub, and found out that it was trivia night there that I discovered how truly wonderful he was at trivia. We got there after the trivia had started, but participated anyway, and wound up winning a round (and free food) and being in the top 2 or 3 of the groups there that evening, even though we got there late. I knew a lot of the answers to the questions, but not the really obscure ones, and nothing about the sports questions. My husband, on the other hand, knew the answers to just about every question. The round we won was due to the husband winning a tie breaker round by naming a little known song that the trivia host played. Few notes into the intro of the song and he shouts out the name. Amazing. I think if we had arrived on time to participate from the beginning we would have had the whole thing in the bag.

Well, tonight is trivia night at that pub once again. My plan is for us to be there on time and ready. Each round winner wins a free pitcher or appetizer, and the winner for the evening wins a gift card from the hosting establishment. We are so going to be drinking free pitchers of beer and eating free food. Hopefully eating more food than drinking pitchers, though, because I have to be at work early in the morning tomorrow. Wish us luck, and if you’re in the neighborhood, join us at Harrigan’s Tavern in Kettering.

Are you good at trivia? Are there any board games you still play?

  • @Kilkennys_Pub - I love Monopoly, too. Hey, where do you work, and when will your insanity end? Sounds grueling!

  • Some of the best moments in life:-
Lying in bed listening to the rain outside…
Thinking about the person you love…
    A long drive on a calm road…
Finding money in your old jeans just when you need it…
    Giggling over silly jokes…
    Holding hands with a friend…
Getting a hug from someone who loves u…
The moment your eyes fill with tears after a big laugh…
Wishing you these moments in your life always..!

  • @malikimran - I have those moments and more all the time! Thanks. =)

  • No I am really not that good at it. To much cultural stuff from before I was born and I suck at sports trivia

  • @trunthepaige - That’s what’s good about playing trivia with a team…somebody else probably knows what you don’t. The sports trivia will always elude me…I’m just not interested in learning any of it. That’s where husbands usually come in.

  • good luck tonight ……………..

  • @Alive_in_Vegas - Thank you.  This place we’re going to has the best hot wings (non-breaded). I’m hoping to score some, and extras for lunch tomorrow.

  • In the local paper, there are fifteen trivia questions posted every Sunday in the “Life” section.  I get about half of them.  Don’t know if that’s good or bad.

I like Mahjong.  Nowadays I play it on my computer.

  • @dsullivan - I’d say that’s pretty good. I like Mah Jong…I play the one that comes with Windows, on my PC.

  • @CynaraJane - I work at Cedarville University and this  insanity ends August 1

  • I love scrabble!

  • @comet555 - Ah! That’s another one I enjoy!

  • @Kilkennys_Pub - God give you strength!

  • @skittler335 - I have heard of that game, but never played it. I guess I will invest in one if you recommend it that highly!

  • I used to be amazing, but I would say I’m just average now. I love the game Settlers of Catan! If you’re a fan of board games at all you MUST play it!

  • @CynaraJane - It would be so worth it! Nearly every one of our friends and family members that have played with us either bought one themselves or put it on their Christmas list for us to give them! There are also expansion packs to change the set up of the game if you get really “hard core.” LoL I will warn you that the initial set up is a little complicated (as the board changes with every game as you lay out the “land” pieces.) But once that’s done it’s pretty simple.

  • Good for both of you to recall trivia.. definitely NOT my strong suit.

I liked many games growing up..although it is not a board game, I really liked Boggle.

  • I absolutely SUCK at trivia games, even though I know quite a bit of trivia. I can tell you trivial things in conversation, but under pressure, forget it.Now get mre playing backgammon and most people don’t have a prayer. that’s the game I love the most and I am very good at it. How is your backgammon game?

  • I love trivia!  I’m just really bad at arts and entertainment =[  I love Monopoly, Risk, and of course Trivial Pursuit

  • @greatredwoman - Oh, Boggle! I almost forgot about that game, but I used to play it quite a bit. Thanks for the memory jog!

  • @ShadesOfAnnie - Having only played backgammon a handful of times, I suck! LOL

  • @npr32486 - Risk! I haven’t played that in forever. Fun game, and I am good at it.

  • I’m decent at trivia.  I usually opt for card games over board games as you can take a deck almost anywhere and get a lot of variety from it.

I had to come by when I saw your plug.  Well played.

  • @Ro_ad808 - Cards are definitely the most versatile, and portable. As for the plug…thanks.

  • We started something huh? What name did you come up with?

  • I have a lot of useless knowledge and information wandering around in my head, but every once in a while something useful seeps out at the most opportune time. Like the fact that a satelite dish points at a geostationary earth orbiting satellite, useless info until you have to move a dish and do not want to lose the signal. I babble..
